Election lure in Jind: Pakoras and jalebis

Some of the candidates in Jind tried to lure voters through stalls of “pakora” and “jalebi” outside booths.

Supporters put up hoardings and other electioneering material of their candidates at stalls. They called out to voters and appealed to them for casting their vote in the favour of their candidates.

A similar stall was set up outside a booth near Saini Dharmashala. Supporters were busy distributing “pakoras’ and “jalebis” when Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vinay Singh and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Kumar Arya raided the site and removed the stalls.

The DC seized LPG cylinders and removed electioneering material. The administration instructed candidates and supporters against violating norms.

The police, meanwhile, challaned two auto-rickshaws hired by candidates to transport voters to booths. Posters of candidates were pasted on the autos.

The DC said, “I noticed posters of candidates pasted on some autos. On verifying, I came to know that vehicles were hired by candidates for bringing voters from their homes to booths”.

The administration would collect details of candidates who violated the norms, he added.

80% turnout in K’shetra

More than 80 per cent voters exercised their franchise in three Municipal Committees of Ladwa, Shahbad and Pehowa on Sunday. Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Krishan Kumar Bedi and Haryana Staff Selection Commission chairperson Bharat Bhushan Bharti were among those cast their vote in Shahbad and Pehowa, respectively. A heavy police force was deployed in the city to ward off any untoward incident. With 85.1 per cent turnout, Shahbad was the first to complete polling in all 32 booths. Candidates made sure that their supporters reached booths as early as 8 am. TNS

Karnal poll count: 82% 

Braving heatwave, a large number of voters turned out to cast their vote at four Municipal Councils (MCs) in the district. More than 82 per cent of voters exercised their franchise in Assandh, Gharaunda, Nissing and Tararoi. Voters from all walks of life showed enthusiasm as they came out from their houses amid temperature hovering around 40 degree Celsius. Arrangements for drinking water were made at all booths. The maximum turnout was witnessed in Nissing at 88.7 per cent, while Assandh witnessed 82.3 per cent, Taraori 81.4 per cent and Gharaunda 80.1 per cent. Winners get certificates 

In the Gannaur Municipal Committee election, Ankit Malhotra won from ward 13 with the highest margin of 1,170 votes. His nearest rival, Pritika, polled 109 votes. The other winners are Kiran (ward 1), Meenu (ward 2), Varun Jain (ward 3), Khusbu Jain (ward 4), Nawab Singh (ward 5), Rameshwar Dass (ward 6), Anju Bala (ward 7), Sat Prakash Sharma (ward 8), Ashok Saini (ward 9), Praveen (ward 10), Nisha Sharma (ward 11), Sunil (ward 12), Neeru Adhlakha (ward 14), Harish Madaan (ward 15), Babita (ward 16) and Ishwar (ward 17). Gannaur SDM Manisha Sharma, who was the returning officer, distributed certificates to winners. oc
