Election violence: Five FIRs registered in Rajouri district

RAJOURI: The police have registered five FIRs against troublemakers during polling in Rajouri district yesterday.

The police have registered five FIRs against troublemakers during polling in Rajouri district yesterday.

An FIR was also registered against persons involved in an attack on Rakesh Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Nowshera, near Kalakot town yesterday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Rajouri, Haseeb Mughalsaid some unidentified BJP workers had been booked at the Kalakot police station under Sections 307, 353, 427, 147 and 148 of the RPC. He said they were involved in a fatal attack on ASP Rakesh Kumar, who had received seven stitches on the head.

Six policemen, including the ASP, were injured when some activists of the BJP and the PDP got into a scuffle.

The incident happened when four vehicles carrying EVMs after polling yesterday were stopped by the miscreants. To prevent the EVMs from getting damaged, the police party escorting the vehicles resorted to teargas shelling. The miscreants threw stones at the policemen, injuring all of them.

Sources said the activists of the PDP and the BJP had got into a scuffle at Bali after some dispute over alleged bogus voting. Later, more policemen were rushed to the spot to bring the EVMs safely to the strong room and to control the situation.

Abdul Ghani, BJP candidate for Kalakot, and Vibodh Gupta, BJP state vice-president, along with 200 supporters blocked the highway at Muradpur today . They raised slogans against the police and demanded arrest of the PDP supporters who had clashed with them yesterday.

Meanwhile, an NC worker was also booked at the Kalakot police station for creating trouble during polling.
