Forestry can uplift poor: Expert

DEHRADUN:Dr Peter Holmgren, Director General, Center for International Forestry Research, has stated that forestry should help create livelihood opportunities for the poor.

Dr Peter Holmgren, Director General, Center for International Forestry Research, has stated that forestry should help create livelihood opportunities for the poor.

Talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Forestry Conference today, Dr Holmgren said forestry should benefit people. “Forestry across the 

globe must create livelihood opportunities to eradicate poverty,” Dr Holmgren said. 

He admitted that people faced problems in countries where there are government owned forests. “Due to large number of regulations in forest policies, the local communities and people face lot of problems, which is a matter of concern,” Dr Peter Holmgren pointed out. He welcomed the Forest Rights Act in India.

Dr Peter Holmgren said forestry could help 

mitigate the effects of climate change.  He said sustainably managed forests could effectively address a range of environmental concerns and provide social, economic benefits. He called for international cooperation to achieve the sustainable development goals.
