Residents will soon get respite from heaps of garbage spread all over streets and localities in the city. The Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) is set to place underground dustbins with an aim to cover open garbage, which has become an eyesore for the people.

According to officials concerned, during the first phase of the project, the DMC will install 100 underground dustbins in the main areas of the city. This will prevent stray animals from gathering around the dustbins and creating trouble to the passers-by.

Dr RK Singh, a senior health officer of the DMC, said the idea was adopted from Haldwani city where the project was running successfully. In the initial stage, we would install 100 dustbins in the main areas of the city. The project would cost around Rs 3 crore and tenders for it had been issued. The work would begin soon.
