DERA BASSI: Goods worth crores of rupees are reported to have been destroyed in a fire that broke out in a handicraft factory at Jawaharpur village near here in the wee hours today.

Goods worth crores of rupees are reported to have been destroyed in a fire that broke out in a handicraft factory at Jawaharpur village near here in the wee hours today. However, no casualty was reported in the incident.

“Since it was early morning, the factory was closed when the fire broke out,” sources said. The fire started around 1 am at Uma Exim Pvt Ltd.

A watchman on duty at the factory saw smoke billowing out. He informed the owners and fire brigade officials, who reached the spot in no time.

The is believed to have been caused by a short circuit in the packing unit. The fire broke out in the packing unit of the factory around 1.30 am. Manjeet Singh, Fire Officer, Dera Bassi, said they received information at 1.42 am after which three fire tenders along with a team of firefighters were rushed to the spot. After a struggle of nearly three hours, the team managed to control the blaze.

Sources in Uma Exim Pvt Ltd said though the exact loss of goods in the fire was yet to be calculated, it was estimated to be around Rs 2.5 crore.
