A militant was arrested by the security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir on Monday following inputs of a possible grenade attack in the area.

The militant has been identified as Bilal Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Aglar village near Zainapora in Shopian district.

The Superintendent of Police (SP), Shopian, Tahir Saleem, confirmed the arrest. The SP, however, did not divulge the details.

Sources said intelligence inputs were received about a possible grenade attack in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian district.

“A search operation was launched in the area,” a police source said.

During the operation, suspicious movement was seen in an apple orchard. When the orchard area was cordoned off, Sheikh tried to lob a grenade at the security forces but was overpowered. Two more grenades were recovered from him, the source added.

The sources further said the militant had recently given the security forces the slip in Wurapur village of the south Kashmir district.
