Acting on a petition seeking directions for constituting a special investigation team (SIT) for investigating the Rs 400-crore “scam” allegedly involving political and other influential persons, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today put Punjab on notice.

The notice by Justice MMS Bedi came on a petition filed by Bakshinder Singh and 15 other petitioners through counsel Mohinder Kumar.

The petitioners claimed they had invested their savings in certain companies, but they were cheated like other investors “under the garb of chain memberships, fixed deposits, recurring deposit schemes and investment in property schemes”.

The petitioners added that an FIR was registered in July 2016, but no follow-up action was taken.

“Efforts were made to hush up the case, which led to protests by investors,” Kumar said.

He added that a number of affected persons approached the Punjab Human Rights Organisation and alleged that the kingpin of the fraud was an Akali Dal leader, the then ruling party in Punjab, but the police were under their undue influence.
