Jammu, June 29

Not able to rein in “electricity thieves”, the Power Development Department (PDD) has directed people in Jammu to avoid using Air Conditioners during peak hours to save “overburdened” transmission lines and transformers from damages.

A special public campaign has been launched in the city to ensure that the new diktat is implemented.

As per a PDD notification, people have been told not to use ACs from 6 am to 9 am and from 6 pm to 9 pm for the next two months.

The move has surprised consumers who are paying regularly paying their monthly bills. “We are paying for the inefficiency of the PDD,” said Komal Sharma, a local resident.

“Despite paying dues in time, people are facing unscheduled cuts. There should be action against people involved in power theft,” said Komal.

J&K scored lowest in Energy Management Efficiency in India.

Energy demand in Jammu and Kashmir has increased during the 11th Plan period at an annual rate of 5-6 per cent. To meet the demand, the PDD has enforced power cuts across the state during winter and summer months.

An official said the department was taking “shortcut to hide its failure”.

“There is huge pressure from the government on the department to improve its functioning and directions have been passed to take strict action against the consumers involved in pilferage. But the PDD is not acting due to pressure from influential people,” said a source.
