Polling in punjab to be over by 5 p.m. on February 19

Chandigarh, February 15

The one-day polling in Punjab in respect of both Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies will be over by 5 p.m. on February 19.  Counting of votes will, however, not be taken up before February 21.

Counting of votes in 57 Assembly constituencies will be taken up on February 21, in 41 on February 22 and in the remaining six on February 23.

In eight of the 13 Parliamentary constituencies, counting will start on February 23 and in the remaining five on February 24.

Over 63 lakh voters will go to the polls to elect 104 state Vidhan Sabha and 13 Lok Sabha members.  In all 6,886 polling stations have been set up.

Each polling station will be manned by a presiding officer and five polling officers.  Each presiding officer has been supplied with about 50 items of materials which include ballot boxes, indelible ink, screens, paper seals, etc.

Adequate police arrangements are being made to maintain law and order at the polling stations.  In addition to normal police force, contingents of the PAP, Home guards and Central Armed Police are being suitably deployed in every district.

About one crore and 25 lakh ballot papers will be required for the General Election in the State.  They have already reached their destinations.
