St Catherine varsity students get Ayurvedic medicine knowhow

Dehradun, January 18

A group of 20 students of St Catherine University, Minnesota, USA, studying Masters of Holistic Health Sciences visited Ayurvedic Centre of Himalayan Institute Hospital with their leaders Thelma Gonsalve, Dr Anderson Sate and Dr Bruggemann to understand healthcare provided by Ayurvedic medicine.

The holistic health in St Catherene University is taken as an integrative, complementary or alternative healthcare which crosses borders, disciplines, time, religions and ways of knowing and healing to benefit individuals, communities and the environment.

The students visited Panchkarma centre which was followed by an overview of Ayurvedic medicine in India and its contribution in healthcare. Professor RK Mamgain, consultant physician Ayurvedic medicine, Himalayan Hospital, gave a lecture on the philosophical, mythological and holistic approach of ayurveda towards comprehensive health care and highlighted the grey areas of medicine where Ayurveda could play a significant role in patient care.

Group members were interested to know about the integration with mainstream medicine in the Himalayan hospital. Professor Pratibha Mamgain, consultant, Ayurvedic medicine explained the possibility of integration in various areas of medicine, including lifestyle disorders, chronic diseases, preventive care, palliative health care, cancer care, psychosomatic problems and in strengthening research to find out new treatments options. A detailed lecture and interactive session was organised to explain students about the detoxification programme under ‘Panchkarma’ carried out at the Ayurvedic centre of the hospital.
