Three killed as assailants open fire on SUV in Karnal

Three persons were killed while two others sustained injuries after some assailants opened fire on a Fortuner SUV near Brahmanand Chowk here this afternoon.

The deceased have been identified as Naresh (40) of Bhambarehri village, presently living in Shiv Colony here, Rajesh (35) of Jani village and Gulab (45) of Bastali village. Naresh was a gym owner while Rajesh and Gulab were liquor traders. Gulab was also a kabbadi player.

The injured were identified as Chand (50) and Manoj (35) of Bastali village. Their condition is stated to be critical.

A case has been registered in this connection against Kaptan, a resident of Rangrutikhera, Surjeet, a resident of Ballah village, and seven-eight others, said the police.

The incident took place in broad daylight exposing the law and order situation here.

As per the police, the accused also came in an SUV and managed to flee from the spot. Old enmity is stated to be the reason behind the attack.

The victims were going to attend a marriage function in Ramdev Colony near Sector 16 in a Fortuner. When they reached near Brahmanand Chowk, eight to nine persons forced the victims to stop the vehicle by parking their SUV in front of the Fortuner, said Raj Kumar, DSP. He maintained that after stopping the vehicle, the miscreants opened fire on them.

The DSP further stated that teams of the CIA and police stations in the vicinity were formed and several nakas laid to nab the accused.

Following the incident, family members and friends of the victims assembled at the Trauma Centre of Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College here. They demanded the arrest of the accused and refused to get the postmortem of the bodies conducted till the arrests were made.

SP Pankaj Nain reached the hospital and pacified the victims’ family members and assured them of arresting the accused soon.
