Taking a seriousness note of the poor medical facilities in government hospitals falling in the Kumaon region, the high court gave directions to the state to upgrade these facilities, including setting up of trauma centres and providing the requisite staff.

The Division Bench of Justice Lok Pal Singh and Justice Rajiv Sharma directed the state to make Swami Rama Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (which is part of Sushila Tiwari Memorial hospital, Haldwani), fully functional by creating posts of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, hematological oncologists, gynaecologists, 31 oncologists and paediatric oncologists within three months.

It also directed the state to upgrade the status of Swami Rama Cancer Hospital and Research Institute to the State Cancer Institute within three months. The court said the state should ensure that suitable incentives befitting their status. The court directed the government to fill all vacancies of medical officers in the Kumaon division within four months from Friday.

“The state government is directed to establish the Trauma Centre in Government Medical College, Haldwani, and make it functional within three months from Friday as per the standard procedure,” the judgment order said.
