Solan, July 14

An increase in the population has led to water shortage in Dharampur and its surrounding areas.

Even the Rs 64-crore Giri Potable Water Scheme has failed to bridge the supply-demand gap. Under the scheme, launched in 2008, water is supplied to Solan, parts of Dharampur and villages in the Kasauli constituency.

Residents of Dharampur, Sanawar, Garkhal, and other villages get water on alternate days through the year. The situation worsens in summer as the residents get water after three days. Executive engineer of the Irrigation and Public Health Department Hemant Tanwar said there was no such shortage. “The distribution network is yet to be expanded, which is why the supply to the villages in Kasauli is irregular.

He added that a detailed project report to expand the distribution network of Solan was being prepared and efforts were afoot to make available more water to the villages. Sources said against the usual 80,000 lakh litres of water required to serve Solan on a daily basis, 15,000 lakh litres to 20,000 lakh litres was lost due to faulty distribution lines.
