Chandigarh, February 8

In a decision that would speed up the decision-making process in cases related to family law, the Haryana Government has decided to set up family courts in seven more districts. With this, the number of districts having family courts has gone to up to 15.

The decision to set up family courts in the districts of Jind, Kurukshetra, Panchkula, Panipat, Rewari, Sirsa and Yamunanagar has been taken by SS Prasad, Additional Chief Secretary, Administration of Justice, “in consultation” with the Punjab and Haryana High Court, sources said.

Haryana already has two family courts each in the districts of Ambala, Gurugram, Faridabad, Sonepat, Bhiwani, Hisar, Rohtak and Karnal.

The decision seemed to be an offshoot of a memorandum submitted by an advocate of the high court Hemant Kumar to the state government. Hemant Kumar approached the state government after moving an RTI application before the high court.

In reply to his RTI application, the high court had said that postings and transfer of judges came within the purview of the high court while the establishment of the family courts was the prerogative of the Haryana Government.
