State gender ratio goes up by10 points

ROHTAK: The state has witnessed a rise in the sex ratio at birth (SRB) in the first quarter of the current year with 924 girls born against 1,000 boys. The figure was 914 in 2018. Panchkula has topped the state with the highest SRB of 982, while Jhajjar has performed dismally and is at the bottom of the tally, followed by Sirsa and Mahendragarh.

The state has witnessed a rise in the sex ratio at birth (SRB) in the first quarter of the current year with 924 girls born against 1,000 boys. The figure was 914 in 2018.

Panchkula has topped the state with the highest SRB of 982, while Jhajjar has performed dismally and is at the bottom of the tally, followed by Sirsa and Mahendragarh. As per the civil registration system, the SRB is less than 900 in Jhajjar, Sirsa and Mahendragarh districts.

Fatehabad is second with the SRB of 951, followed by Yamunanagar (948) and Jind (943). Besides, Palwal has registered the SRB of 942, Ambala 941, Faridabad 936, Kaithal and Panipat 935, Hisar 932 and Rohtak 927.

Out of the 1,52,747 children born across the state up to April, there were 79,388 boys and 73,359 girls.

In 2014, the gender ratio of the state was 871, but it witnessed an upward trend with 876 births in 2015, 900 in 2016 and 914 in 2017. It remained the same in 2018.

“Jhajjar district has been registering a downward trend since last year. It had recorded birth of 920 girls against 1,000 boys in 2017. The figure went down to 875 in 2018 and it has now been recorded at 862. The SRB in Sirsa and Mahendragarh is 891 and 898, respectively,” said the sources.

Out of 4,142 children born in Panchkula up to March, 2,052 were girls. As many as 3,495 childbirths, including 1,618 girls, were reported in Jhajjar district.

In Rohtak, 7,548 children were born till April and of them, 3,631 were girls. The highest number of childbirths (14,418) during the period was reported in Faridabad. Of these, 7,448 were boys and 6,970 girls.

Kurukshetra was at the 12th position with the SRB of 926, followed by Nuh (923) and Rewari (919). Gurugram has the SRB of 903, Bhiwani and Karnal 902 and Sonepat 901.

Rewari has been witnessing an upward trend in terms of gender ratio for the past nine years. It had the SRB of 780 in 2012, 797 in 2013, 802 in 2014, 824 in 2015, 870 in 2016, 893 in 2017 and 914 in 2018.
