Nurpur, June 21

The Pathankot-Mandi national highway in Nurpur has witnessed a sudden spurt in road accidents during the past one year.

Two-wheeler riders can be seen without helmets and attending mobile calls while riding, violating traffic rules. In the absence of regular police checking, the number of road accidents has increased, claiming young lives.

Minors can also be seen driving two-wheelers. Local NGOs and social organisations have underlined the need to revive a special police drive similar to the drive undertaken by the Kangra district police administration in 2016.

Between February 2016 and September 2017, social campaigns like ‘no helmet, no petrol’ was launched in the district.

A group of school students took part in the awareness campaign to sensitise two wheelers.

Santosh Patial, SP Kangra, admitted to violation of traffic rules in the border areas of Nurpur.

He said the police were carrying out drives from time-to-time to check violation across the district and offenders were being fined.
