Terming the PDP-BJP government’s policies anti-people, hundreds of anganwadi workers on Tuesday blocked the Tawi bridge for over an hour disrupting the traffic.

They are protesting for the past over 100 days.

Under the banner of the Anganwadi Workers and Helpers’ Union, a rally was taken out from Dogra Chowk due to which traffic was halted on the Tawi bridge connecting two parts of Jammu city near Bikram Chowk.

There was total chaos for more than an hour as commuters could not cross to the other side. The protesters warned to intensify their agitation and alleged that the ruling PDP-BJP government had backtracked from its commitment to come up with a policy to address their issues.

“It is unfortunate that thousands of women workers are being humiliated and forced to come on roads when a woman Chief Minister is heading the government. Total confusion has been created by the ruling parties on our issues,” said Asha Sharma, a protesting worker.

“Successive governments have discriminated with anganwadi workers and helpers for years and only hollow promises have been made. We are demanding our rights because a majority of us feel exploited while crores are spent on MLAs and ministers,” said Anjali Sharma, a helper working in the Kot Bhalwal block.
