The exercise for selection of new Vice Chancellor of the University of Jammu (JU), the country’s first ISO-certified institute of research and higher learning, has gained momentum as all the 11 shortlisted aspirants, including four locals, would make a power-point presentation before the search committee in New Delhi tomorrow.

Official sources said four local aspirants of Jammu University, including the incumbent Vice Chancellor Prof RD Sharma, left for New Delhi today and they would appear before the search committee tomorrow.

The other three local aspirants of the university are Prof Naresh Padha of the Physics Department, Prof Desh Bandhu Gupta, Director, Colleges Development, and Prof Kuldeep Sharma of the Zoology Department.

Sources said the aspirants for the top-most post in Jammu University would give a power-point presentation about their vision for the varsity.

A three-member search committee was constituted after Prof Mohan Paul Singh Ishar had requested Governor NN Vohra, who is the Chancellor of the university, to relieve him of the assignment as the Vice Chancellor about three months prior to completion of his tenure, which was to be ended on January 27, 2015.

Prof RD Sharma was given the charge of the Vice Chancellor of Jammu University on October 31 to carry out the duties of the VC till new appointment for the post was made.

The three-member search committee is headed by Arun Nagvekar, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Prof BB Bhattacharya, former Vice Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), and RP Aggarwal, former Secretary in the Human Resource Development Ministry.

Sources said the search committee, after holding interaction with all the 11 aspirants for the post of Vice Chancellor, would form a panel of three to four finalised candidates and submit its report to the Governor, who would take a final call on the appointment of new Vice Chancellor. “The new Vice Chancellor is likely to be appointed in the first week of March,” the sources said.
