To reduce Durbar shift problems, Jammu sectt gets 1,500 computers

In an order to reduce the transportation cost and breakage risk during the Durbar move, the information technology (IT) department has procured about 1,500 computers, including laptops, for different departments at the civil secretariat here.

Earlier, the equipment used to be moved from the summer capital to the winter capital and vice-versa during the biannual Durbar move. This time, the existing equipment has not been shifted from Srinagar with the Durbar offices opening in Jammu.

Instead the IT department of the state has decided to establish separate infrastructure in the civil secretariat in Jammu. The department has bought about 1,500 computers, including laptops, for different departments. It has also provided external hard disks of one-terabyte (TB) capacity to each section for storing data during transportation from Srinagar to Jammu and vice-versa at the time of Durbar shift.

“The idea is to reduce the cost of transportation and breakage of the IT equipment during the transportation. This long-term investment will the help reduce the effort and cost,” said Saugat Biswas, Secretary, IT department, J&K. “Hard disks have been provided to each section for the storage of the data. These can be easily shifted between the two capitals of the state during the Durbar move,” he added. The department has also ensured safety of the computers left at the Srinagar civil secretariat, by storing them in moisture and dust-free rooms, especially allotted by the estate department to the IT section.

“All devices are safely stored under the supervision of IT experts at Srinagar. This will be done in Jammu also at the time of moving to Kashmir in summers,” Biswas said.

The IT department has also decided to the replace 20 per cent of the computers with high configuration laptops, which are being provided to the officers who needs to work while on the move or from home. All departments were asked to provide a list of officers who needed laptops instead of desktops.

According to sources, the finance department has released special funds for the equipment, which are expected to cost more than Rs 5 crore. This includes high configuration laptops (at least i5 processors), desktops with more than 20-inch screen size and best configuration, 1 TB hard disks, colour and black and white WiFi printers and other IT-related gadgets.
