The Commissionerate police have arrested an employee who was allegedly stealing people’s ATM cards by deceiving them.

The police, on a tip-off, arrested Harjit Singh, alias Babbu, a resident of Babak Daria near Hoshiarpur. Eight different ATMs with different numbers as well as 110 gm of intoxicant substances were recovered from him.

The accused revealed that for the past two months, he had withdrawn Rs 5 lakh from various ATMs and had rendered 25-30 ATMs unusable by throwing these into gunda nullhas.

The police claimed that Harjit Singh used to take ATM cards from auto driver Tarlochan Singh, a resident Hoshiarpur, and Deepa, a resident of Maqsoodan.

Speaking to police officials, the accused said he used to make one of his men sit as a passenger in autos and would seat himself as another passenger.

While one would ask the auto driver to speed up, the other would, by trickery, steal a passenger’s ATM card.

They also stood outside ATMs and on the pretext of helping elderly people and used to deprive the latter of their ATM cards.
