From businessmen to students and sarpanches, all have been showing interest in buying saplings through the i-Hariyali app. Today, people from all walks of life gathered at a nursery in Suranussi to buy saplings, with an aim to protecting the environment for the coming generation.

Notably, dedicated to the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the district administration was planting minimum 550 saplings in each village across Jalandhar.

The Kalyanpur village sarpanch also came to the nursery to buy 550 saplings. He said since the government had asked them to plant the saplings, it was their duty to comply with the orders.

“There is a huge rush at the nursery. People have been coming in a large number and the initiative will help in protecting our environment,” he said. A businessman from Jalandhar had bought 1,000 saplings. He said every year, he plants saplings in various areas of the city and it gives him immense happiness.

Gurpreet Kaur, a student who has just completed her graduation from Kapurthala, had come all the way to Jalandhar to buy the saplings.

“My mother is a nature lover and she keeps on telling me the importance of planting trees. Since reports of earth running out of water has been coming in, I think it is the high time that we all shun our carelessness towards our environment and start working towards the cause,” Kaur said, adding that her friend accompanied her to get the saplings when she got to know about the initiative taken by the government. Officials said the saplings would be planted with special care so that each plant would have enough space for its growth.

They said any NGO or individual could approach the department for getting such saplings free of cost. They said the department was firmly committed to enhancing the green cover in the district to make it clean, green and pollution-free.
