Jalandhar, December 5

Enter Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar and beautiful big homes and wide roads welcome you. But as they say, all that glitters is not gold. The adage goes well with this area which now comes under ward number 31. Earlier, this ward number was 60.

Residents in this high-profile area have issues like stray dogs, commercialisation taking place on a large scale, scattered garbage, water getting accumulated in the rains etc.

Ashwini Kumar, a dryclean shop owner who has been working here for the past 12 years, said garbage problem and non-working street-lights near shops are a big problem.

“We want that whoever comes here should definitely pay heed to our problems and get us out of these issues,” said Kumar.

Ravinder Dhir, an industrialist, said commercialisation was taking place at such a fast pace that residential colonies would be lost in the coming days and the Nagar would lose its identity.

“Another problem is water accumulation during the rains which is why I often ask my relatives not to come to meet us when it rains. This is the condition of this area,” he said.

The market in the Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar market lacks lights due to which it becomes difficult for shopkeepers to step out in the evening.

Amandeep Kaur, a bakery owner, said in the evening, it gets really difficult for them to step out in the absence of lights.

“I often remove my rings and earrings whenever I close the bakery because any untoward incident can happen. So my major demand is that at least the street-lights must be installed in the market area,” said Kaur.

Harsharan Kaur Happy, who has got a ticket from the Congress to contest from this ward, said stray dog and sewerage problems are the ones which would be looked on a priority basis if she won the elections.

“Every problem will be tackled after talking to residents,” she said.

However, Parminder Kaur Pannu who was the councillor of the ward, said this was a beautiful ward and no big problem ailed the ward.
