‘I am khadoos’

Varun Badola

What attracted you towards Mere Dad Ki Dulhan?

When I read the script, I was sure that I can do justice to this character because it doesn’t have any opulent drama. Every time you pick up a character, you work towards shaping it up the way it has been narrated. But a lot many times the shows aren’t story driven or character driven. A father-daughter relationship on TV has been experimented before but not with much success.

What makes Amber Sharma’s character different?

Amber Sharma is a very true-to-life character. You will find such characters in every other house. You may not find a lot of single fathers, but you can definitely relate to idiosyncrasies of the role. The man who has loved his wife to the core is now living alone with his daughter. They fight with each other, spend time with each other and are so dependent on each other that they can’t live without each other.

What is common between Varun Badola and Amber Sharma?

Talking about similarities, personally I am told I am khadoos. I don’t smile much and avoid indulging in complications in life. This is how Amber Sharma is projected in the show who is a grumpy and dependent father. However, I am totally a different person as Varun Badola.

What according to you is the USP of this show?

First and foremost, a good script is something viewers crave for followed by the performance. The show’s differentiated concept along with its casting is something that audiences can look forward to.

You’ve known Shweta Tiwari for a long time, but you are paired opposite her for the first time. What do you have to say about working with her?

I have always admired Shweta for her powerful acting. We both are playing unique but relatable quirky characters. I am sure we will definitely create on-screen magic with our performances.

How has content evolved over the years and as an actor, what do you look forward to?

I believe TV as a medium has the power to change things and influence people. But the moment everything becomes business we lose the seriousness of the plot. Makers have created obnoxious content for far too long thinking it’s the recipe for success. However, with Mere Dad kiDulhan, I feel makers are once again back with progressive content.
