The keenly awaited sci-fi psychological horror thriller Escape Room will hit cinema halls in India on February 1. Deborah AnnWoll, who is seen in Marvels’ hit Netflix series Daredevil, plays the lead role in Escape Room. We catch up with Deborah and here’s all what she has to say about the upcoming film:

What made you take up Escape Room?

I was attracted to the fact that it was not a gory horror movie, but more about the psychological torment and the relationship with fear. Here, two women in the story help each other and find a support system – which is something I appreciated just by reading the script.

Please share details of your character.

I play Amanda. She knows how to take a step back when necessary, to let other people shine. Also, Amanda knows what her strengths are. And I love how after seeing her in a weak moment she rallies and comes back to be a hero. This is a story of redemption for Amanda.

How do you see the strong bond between your character and the other lady, Zoey?

It is definitely the strongest bond Amanda has in the group. One thing they both have in common is that even though they are not selfless, when the push comes to shove they will choose the greater good for the group.

Any memory from the shoot?

The first acting test I had on this set was precisely with Taylor, when my character has an attack and Zoey is there next to me holding my hand and supporting me.

How would you describe Adam Robitel’s direction style?

Having been an actor himself, Adam is one of those filmmakers that trusts his actors and knows that we thrive while challenged.

We hear that the movie also has moments of humor.

Yes, and that was important while we were shooting the film and later for the audience to enjoy too. As humans, it is not uncommon for us to make a joke when we feel uncomfortable or scared, because it helps relieve tension.

So, how do you look back at the whole experience?

It almost feels like a dream, as we were in a faraway place without friends or family, but bonded quickly while going through these weird escape room experiences. I just remember that feeling of camaraderie and gratefulness for my co-workers.

And what did you learn?

That I was capable of more than I thought I was. I really pushed myself to be able to do all the stunts, and then I also had to learn to access my anger, which is not easy for me to do.
