87 cases of illicit liquor seized

Just a day before the Municipal Council elections in the district, the city police have recovered 87 cases of illegal liquor in separate raids. It is, however, unclear whether the liquor was to be transported in election-bound areas or not.

The police arrested one Shammi Kumar of Bharti Colony. ASI Harjinder Singh, IOCIA 1, said a tip-off was received that the accused had stocked illegal liquor at his house in Bharti Colony. Accordingly, a raid was conducted and the liquor was seized. In another raid, the Ladowal police arrested one Sudhir of Chitti Colony and recovered 29 cases of illegal liquor from him. IO Amarik Singh said a raid was conducted at Jhatian Beit, where the accused had stocked liquor.

In another raid, the Division No. 5 police arrested one Bikramjit Singh of LIG flats, Dugri, and recovered four cases of liquor from him. ASI Surinder Singh said acting on a tip-off, a naka was laid in Sham Nagar, where the accused, who was on an Activa, was stopped for checking and liquor was recovered. The police said the accused was on his way to deliver liquor to his clients.

In a similar case, six cases of liquor were recovered, however, the smuggler managed to escape. IO Sahib Singh said a routine naka was laid on a road at Garhi Togar village, where a Maruti car was signalled to stop for checking on suspicion. The driver stopped the car far behind from the naka and fled after abandoning the car on the road. During search, liquor was recovered from the car.

In another case, the police arrested one Rajan Narang of Jamalpur and recovered two cases of liquor from him.TNS
