To put an end to the menace of stray cattle roaming or squatting all along the roads in the city and other areas, the Municipal Corporation has launched a drive for the shifting of such cattle to Govind Godham (gaushala) here today.

Stray cattle cause obstruction in the smooth flow of traffic and at times, lead to road accidents as well.

A team of Health Department of the Municipal Corporation, led by Municipal Officer of Health Dr YP Singh, accompanied by two vehicles and volunteers from the Govind Godham, started the work of loading stray cattle in vehicles to shift them to gaushala. Till late afternoon, some 20 cattle (cows and bulls) were loaded in vehicles from Jamalpur and surrounding areas and taken to the gaushala.

According to Dr Singh, the MC was paying Rs30 per animal per day to the gaushala for proper care and feed of the cattle. He said there were an estimated 1,000 to 1,500 stray cattle heads in the city and the drive to shift these to cow shelters would take two to three months if the work continued with this speed.

The MC had come into action after persistent demand by the city residents as well as city traffic police to remove stray cattle from roads and shift these to cow shelters/ gaushalas to remove one of the big impediments in the way of smooth flow of vehicular traffic on roads.
