Cultural event, art therapy mark Children’s Day celebrations

The women wing of the Congress celebrated Children’s Day at Guru Arjan Dev Nagar here today. They informed children about the importance of the day and how dear children were to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. The students were given scholarships and motivated to study and work hard.

NGO launched at Guru Nanak Bhawan

A cultural event for the launch of the fortnight for awareness of eye problems in children and its cures was held at Guru Nanak Bhawan. It was attended by leaders such as MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu and various other dignitaries of the city. Speaking on the occasion, leading paediatric ophthalmologist of the city Dr Jagroop Singh Baath informed participants about the eye problems in children, which if not detected at early stage, can lead to partial or complete blindness. He further said the cure for all these issues was easy and affordable. He added, “It is disheartening to know that in India, 40-45 per cent of the prevalent blindness or visual disability is entirely unnecessary or could have been avoided.”

The event also marked the launch of the NGO “Eye see. I learn” which will work towards raising awareness about eye problems in various rural and urban areas and extend financial help to weaker sections of society who cannot afford the treatment.

Art therapy programme at Fortis Hospital

Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, conducted fun activities at its premises and with members of the Red Cross Society. The theme of the Children’s Day activity at the hospital was ‘Flight of Joy: Birds aren’t meant to be caged’. The art therapy programme of the Department of Mental Health and Behavioural Sciences under the aegis of Dr Samir Parikh presented a fun creative way for children admitted at the Fortis Hospital to create birds, butterflies and airplanes out of origami to represent a flight to their place of happiness and strength.
