Now, students of economics demand grace marks

The students and teachers of economics of BA/BSc (general) (semester 3) have demanded grace marks from the university, besides their demand for debarring the paper setter who failed to go through the syllabus while setting the paper.

The students were flabbergasted to find three questions, out of syllabus, carrying a weightage of 18 marks each. “I had prepared so well for the paper, but unfortunately everything went against my expectations. I was so dissatisfied with the paper that I felt that I would now be evaluated just out of 50 per cent, which I could attempt properly. Question number-7 , “What is foreign trade policy? What factors must be considered to formulate it?” carrying a weightage of 18 marks, was out of syllabus. Question number 6 ie ‘Explain Offer curve’ and Question number-8 ‘How balance of payments differs from balance of trade?’ carrying a weightage of 18 marks each were tricky,” said an enraged student.

The teachers of various colleges, teaching this class, expressed their resentment with the paper setter, who, while setting the paper failed to be cautious. “We are sending a representation to the university asking for grace marks. This is not the first time that the university has committed such a blunder. Such callousness on the part of the paper setter should not be tolerated. The examinees had to suffer a lot,” said a teacher.

“The question being out of syllabus and that too with a weightage of 18 marks is really disheartening. Other two questions again carrying the same weightage were otherwise meant to be asked as short questions of 2 marks each, but they were asked to be attempted in detail by the paper setter,” shared another teacher.

Member board of Studies, Panjab University, Dr Amandeep Kullar, said, “The loss of the students will not be tolerated at any cost. The colleges should definitely send a representation for the same and we shall decide for grace marks in the next meeting of the board.”
