Going around in circles, again

A still from Golmaal Again

When God wills, there is no logic, only magic… and when Rohit Shetty ordains, there is absolutely no logic for sure! Only replace magic with nonsense, which looks like fun from one side and sheer moronic humour from another. Either way, it is reason enough to let your hair down.

As Golmaal franchise hits its fourth outing, the usual musketeers are all there, creating mayhem. And putting method to madness is new entrant to the team, Tabu.  As the one who has direct communion with ghosts, if not exactly ghost-buster, she takes us through a ghostly story. Surprisingly, the journey is not ghastly, but not a complete fun ride either. As Shetty marries supernatural with comedy, like his previous films, make no mistake he doesn’t expect you to take him, his rather bizarre story or his favourite bunch of comic actors seriously.

Ajay Devgn, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade, Tusshar Kapoor and Kunal Kemmu, the tried and tested team, is also joined by Parneeti Chopra.  Surprise, surprise, despite the onslaught of comedians (there is Johnny Lever and also Sanjay Mishra), she has a fairly meaty part.  Tabu gets to literally anchor the madhouse, which jumpstarts from comic and leapfrogs to mildly funny and then outright tedious.

Sample of the humour is already there in the trailer. The good news is those are not the only comic one-liners that strike your funny bone. Warsi gets to sink his teeth into quite a few and Devgn gets the ‘brave in the day and scared as hell in the night’ part just right. Talpade and Mishra keep the proceedings going, which after a while becomes too much madness. As the narrative abounds with far too many references to Bollywood films and actors…the filmy allusions cease to be funny after a while.

Still, in this crazy world peopled by ghosts and real beings, you might find your share of laughs. If that is reason enough, get set to go around in circles, only a few of which are comic enough to keep the laughter going.  For a laugh riot, seek another one!
