New Delhi, November 26

The Railways today rationalised quota for differently abled passengers and earmarked lower and middle berths for those in this category. Two berths (a lower and middle in the same cabin) would be reserved for them in each sleeper-class wagon from December 22, the Railways said in a release.

“There are two categories of handicapped persons who can book berth under this quota: one for whom it is compulsory to travel along with an escort and the second for whom it is optional,” it said.

Instances were brought to the notice of senior railway officials “where the handicapped persons for whom it is optional to take an escort were not allowed to book single berth against this quota”. This happened as the second berth would “go vacant as middle berth could not be allotted to handicapped”.
