Abohar, December 14

Not satisfied with the police probe into the reported killing of Dalit youth Bhim Tank and attack on Gurjant Singh at a farmhouse, the National Commission for Scheduled Castes has summoned state ADGP (crime) and Principal Secretary (home) to New Delhi on December 17. The farmhouse belonged to Akali leader and liquor baron Shiv Lal Doda.

Commission Vice-Chairman Dr Raj Kumar Verka today held an inquiry after examining the preliminary report. He also held a closed-door meeting with DIG Amar Chahal, SSP Inder Mohan Bhatti and Deputy Commissioner Ravinder Singh at the Canal Rest House. The officials submitted the status report to Verka.

Verka later told the media that though one person had been held, the key accused was at large. SAD MP Sher Singh Ghubaya and local MLA Sunil Jakhar told Verka that they were not satisfied with the police action. The barbaric act of criminals has also rocked Parliament. The Dalits too are shocked over the brutal attack.

“If the ADGP and the Home Secretary do not file a satisfactory action-taken-report by December 17, the commission may advise the government to hand over the investigation to the CBI,” said Verka. He later went to Bhim Tank’s residence in Sant Nagar to console the family.

Amar Singh Chahal, DIG, said Vicky Sharma, one of the accused, was today nabbed in Sriganganagar and that others too would be arrested within a day or so. He claimed that the victims and the accused had a criminal record. “There is no evidence that this was a caste conflict. Twenty police parties have been mobilised to carry out raids in neighbouring states,” he said.

Ghubaya, along with BJP Mahila Morcha former president Vijay Luxmi Bhadoo, also visited the victim’s family and condemned the brutal act.
