Moga cop arrested for taking Rs 15,000 bribe

The Moga police on Friday arrested ASI Amrik Singh posted at the city police station (South) for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 15,000 from a local youth to help him facilitate the bail of his father, an ex-serviceman, against whom a rape case was registered in May.

Veer Preet Singh, a resident of Khosa Kotla village, alleged that a rape case was falsely registered against his father Veer Singh by a local woman. His father is at present under judicial custody and his bail application was rejected by the court.

The ASI told Veer Preet that he would help him in getting bail for his father from the Punjab and Haryana High Court and demanded Rs 40,000 for this. However, the deal was struck at Rs 20,000.

A few days ago, Veer Preet gave Rs 15,000 as the first instalment to the ASI and recorded it. The video went viral on social media. It was shown to the SSP and other senior officers.

The police on Thursday registered a case under Section 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act against the ASI and arrested him on Friday. He will be produced before a local court on Saturday.

Meanwhile, a senior police officer said the ASI had been suspended and a departmental inquiry had been initiated against him.
