Janer (Moga), March 18

Twentyfour-year-old Army jawan Karamjit Singh, hailing from Janer village of the district, was killed when the Pakistan army violated ceasefire for the second consecutive day resorting to heavy mortar shelling and firing along the LoC in J&K’s Rajouri district on Monday.

A pall of gloom descended on the village after hearing the news of Karamjit’s death. Villagers started gathering at his house to express condolences with the family.

His father Avtar Singh and uncle Dilbagh Singh, who have also served in the Army, said Karamjit was a brave soldier who wanted to do something for the country since childhood. He was unmarried, but was planning to get married this year. He has two elder brothers and one sister. His body is yet to arrive.

The family members said he was scheduled to visit the family for a month from March 20 after taking leave from his present assignment.

His mother Kulwant Kaur has urged the Indian Government to take stern action against Pakistan and stop it from waging unprovoked war in J&K once and forever. “For how long we will keep sacrificing our soldiers,” she asked.

There was also anguish among the locals and they demanded military action against the neighbouring country. Narinder Singh, SDM, Dharamkot, visited the martyr’s family and condoled his death.

Navdip Singh Sangha, AAP spokesperson, urged the state government to provide an ex gratia of Rs 1 crore and a government job to one member of the martyr’s family.
