Former Army chief Gen Joginder Jaswant Singh (JJ Singh) will be withdrawn as a candidate from Khadoor Sahib by Shiromani Akali Dal (Taksali), in favour of Paramjit Kaur Khalra.

Khalra is a candidate chosen by Punjab Democratic Alliance of Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

The announcement was made during a rally of the party workers organised by its youth wing president Harsukhinder Singh, alias Bubby Badal, at his residence in Phase 11, Mohali.

“We have decided to withdraw the nomination of our candidate from Khadoor Sahib constituency in favour of Paramjeet Kaur Khalra. People from Punjab and Sikh diaspora settled in other countries were constantly in touch with us seeking support for Khalra.

“They would ask us to support her due to the great sacrifice of her husband Jaswant Singh Khalra who was killed in police custody for raising the issue of cremation of thousands of bodies in Amritsar  as unclaimed by the police during militancy.”

JJ Singh had contested the Punjab Assembly elections from Patiala on a Shiromani Akal Dal ticket in 2017 and lost to Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh.

He quit SAD in December last year.
