Congress MP Partap Singh Bajwa on Tuesday raised in Rajya Sabha the demand for exhuming and bringing back the remains of Maharaja Duleep Singh, the last ruler of the Sikh empire, from his grave at a church in England’s countryside Elveden.

The remains of revolutionary Udham Singh were brought to India from England in a similar manner.

Raising the issue during the zero hour, Bajwa said Duleep Singh’s remains be brought back and his last rites conducted as per Sikh traditions in Amritsar.

Bajwa also pitched for rewriting the country’s modern history based on “true” facts, especially with regard to developments surrounding Duleep Singh.

Duleep Singh was the youngest son of Maharaja Ranjit Sigh, the ruler of Sikh empire that comprised entire present day Pakistan and parts of Afghanistan. He was born in 1838 in Lahore to Maharani Jind Kaur and was enthroned at the age of five years.
