Recruitment rules unfair, say doctors

The process of recruiting over 100 senior doctors and medical faculty for three government colleges in the state has stirred a controversy. The recruitment is being made by the State Medical Education Department this month.

The department has demanded three-year experience from a recognised PGmedical college for the posts of professor, associate professor and assistant professor.

As many PG courses in Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital (GGSMCH), Faridkot, were started in the last five years and it takes five to six years for a medical college to get recognition for its PG courses from the MCI, so the condition has left over 30 doctors in Faridkot medical college ineligible for these posts.

Aggrieved doctors have written to the CM, Health Minister and Secretary, Medical Education Department, to change the Punjab Medical Education Services (PMES) Rules, 2016, alleging these were arbitrary and clash with the rules of many institutes, including PGIMER, Chandigarh, and AIIMS, New Delhi.

All these institutes acknowledge the teaching experience in any recognised medical college, and not only the recognised postgraduate medical college experience, alleged the doctors.

Even the MCI, considers the teaching experience in any recognised medical college as valid and nowhere has it been mentioned that postgraduate medical college experience is mandatory, alleged the doctors.

They alleged that the Department of Medical Education in the state was using its amended rules, considering only those who have teaching experience in a postgraduate medical college. Satish Chandra, Secretary, Medical Education Department, said the department would look into the complaint of the doctors.
