Abohar, July 18

Sanitation workers of the Municipal Council here on Wednesday observed strike to press for their demand of restoring the old pattern of pension scheme, ensuring more financial security to them. They also demanded that services of ad hoc workers be regularised and contractual work system scrapped.

After breaking pitchers during sloganeering, they arranged a tanker to water plants on the medians of main roads. Later, they walked to Lala Lajpat Rai Children Park, dusted it, washed the statue of the freedom struggle hero and planted saplings in neighbouring main parks. They dusted the statues of freedom fighters and social reformers at crossings. “Instead of staging a dharna, we decided to do something positive,” a union activist said. — OC
