NEW DELHI: Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar defeated Uzbekistan’s Jahongirmirza Turobov to enter the finals of the 57kg freestyle event at the U-23 World Championships in Bucharest.

Indian wrestler Ravi Kumar defeated Uzbekistan’s Jahongirmirza Turobov to enter the finals of the 57kg freestyle event at the U-23 World Championships in Bucharest. The Indian outwitted Turobov 10-8 in the semifinals and will face Japan’s Toshihiro Hasegawa in the final on Saturday. In the quarterfinals, Ravi had outclassed Ukraine’s Taras Markovych 12-4, while getting past Razvan Marian Kovacs of Romania in the round of 16.

The Indian challenge ended at the Hong Kong Open after Kidambi Srikanth and Sameer Verma lost their respective men’s singles quarterfinal matches. Srikanth suffered a 17-21 13-21 loss to eighth seed Kenta Nishimoto. World No. 18 Verma also failed to tame local hope Lee Cheuk Yiu, who came through the qualifiers to seal his maiden semifinal spot, with a 21-15 19-21 21-11 win.

Lakshya in quarterfinals of World Junior Championships

Lakshya Sen progressed to the quarterfinals of the Badminton World Junior Championships after defeating Chinese Taipei’s Chen Shiau Cheng in the men’s singles event. The 17-year-old from Almora saw off ninth seed Chen 15-21 21-17 21-14 in a match that lasted a little under an hour. The men’s doubles pair of Vishnu Vardhan Goud Panjala and Srikrishna Sai Kumar Podile also entered the quarters with a 21-11 21-17 win over the Indonesian combination of Dwiki Rafian Restu and Bernadus Bagas Kusuma Wardana.

A limping Shubhankar Sharma shrugged off a heel injury to card an impressive 5-under 67 and be tied-20th at 4-under after Round 2 of the DP World Tour Championships here today. Sharma, who rose to tied-5th at one stage, dropped a double-bogey on the par-5 14th, but recovered with birdies on the 15th and 18th. He is seven shots behind the leader, England’s Matt Wallace (65).

Anirban Lahiri missed the cut in the Australian Open after shooting a 3-over 75 in Round 2 to finish at 4-over. An Byeong-hun hit a hole-in-one on his way to a 3-under 69 for a share of a one-stroke lead. Australian Max McArdle joined the South Korean on 8-under after firing a flawless 66.

Sandro Rodriguez struck a brace as Chennai City FC beat former champions Aizawl FC 2-1 to stay at the top in the I-League. Ansumanah Kromah’s 72nd-minute goal for the hosts was not good enough to prevent a second consecutive loss. Chennai now have 13 points from five games, seven points clear of second-placed East Bengal. Aizawl are at the bottom of the table.
