"Look at the Big Work"

THERE is one sentence in General Smut's recent speech which deserves wider publicity than has so far been given to it. We refer to his observation that while "the Premier had his faults, they were the faults of genius, and at a time of supreme crisis, when a real live man came forward to guide the forces of the nation be claimed that they should not look at mistakes but at the big work." Of course a remark like this is not to be taken literally. Even Mr Lloyd George cannot claim to be immune from criticism, and assuredly it would not be good either for him or his country if his mistakes were entirely overlooked. But it is one thing to point out a mistake, and even to criticise them with the requisite measure of strength; it is quite another to twist mistakes into crimes.
