Mr Gandhi on concessions

Replying to an interviewer at Madras, Mr Gandhi is reported to have stated that he attached greater importance to work intended to secure the moral, material and economic regeneration of the country than to concessions from the Government. When once the people make themselves fit by their character and capacity, Mr Gandhi   thinks the grant of privileges will follow as a matter of course. But this does not mean that the people who are fit today shall be denied the privileges until the $50   millions acquire the necessary qualification.  Moreover, concessions are absolutely necessary even for moral, material and economic development. Mr Gandhi’s statement should not therefore be interpreted to   mean a material difference between him and the Congress school of politicians.
