District and Sessions Judge Kamaljit Lamba on Wednesday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for killing his pregnant wife in a one-year-old case. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict who had bludgeoned his wife to death in May 12, 2018.
The victim used to ask her unemployed husband, Chanan Singh, to seek work and often entered into verbal duels over it. On May 12, when she asked her husband to seek a job, a heated verbal exchange took place between them and the victim’s husband hit her with a baseball bat on her head causing grievous injuries. She was admitted to a hospital in a critical condition where she succumbed to her injuries.
The victim’s father Binder Singh, a resident of Dabwali in Sirsa district of Haryana, in his complaint to the police stated that his daughter Ramandeep was married to Chanan Singh of Chak Ruldu Singhwala. She had given birth to a boy after her marriage and was nine months pregnant again.
Binder said his son-in-law was unemployed and whenever Ramandeep would ask him to do some job, he would beat her up. To avoid quarrel and torture of her husband, Ramandeep used to come to her parents’ house, but later she would return to her in-laws’ house after mediation by relatives from both sides.
He said on the day of the incident, he got information that his son-in-law had hit his daughter with a baseball bat injuring her seriously. She was then taken to the government hospital in Bathinda and later referred to a private hospital where while undergoing treatment she died.
On the complaint of the victim’s father, the police had registered a murder case against Chanan Singh.
