Over 700 trees coming in the way of the Tribune flyover will get a new lease of life as the Forest Department is planning to replant all of these on the same road. Sources said the plan would be submitted to the higher authorities soon. Once approved, the re-plantation will begin before the start the construction work on the flyover.

A number of mango and kikar trees on Dakshin Marg in the Industrial Area, Phase I and II, are coming in the way of the flyover. Rahul Mahajan, an environmentalist working on re-plantation in the city, has hailed the idea.

He has submitted suggestions in this regard to the Administration. Mahajan said re-plantation was the best option and had been successful all over the world. Many organisations have opposed the decision to remove the trees for the flyover.

The issue has reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Environmentalists argue that these trees are not only adding to the green cover, but also checking pollution caused by heavy traffic on Dakshin Marg and the surrounding Industrial Area. Felling of these trees will cause irreparable harm to the environment. The Tribune flyover has been planned to ease traffic on the congested Dakshin Marg, especially the Tribune roundabout.
