Chandigarh MC seeks details of registered PGs from Estate Office

Chandigarh, February 24

In the wake of the PG fire incident, which claimed three lives, the Municipal Corporation today wrote to the Estate Office to provide details of registered PGs.

MC Commissioner KK Yadav said, “We have asked the Estate Office to provide details of registered PGs. We will inspect these to check whether fire norms are being complied with or not. If there are some deficiencies, these will be brought to the knowledge of the Estate Office.”

As reported in these columns today, the Estate Office does not have a proper record of PGs in the city. It is yet to wake up from its deep slumber even as several untoward incidents have been reported from PGs in the recent past.

The fire wing of the MC said they inspected commercial and industrial units for fire safety norms, but there was no provision for doing so in residential buildings. However, if PGs were running in this manner, they could assist the Estate Office in highlighting the discrepancies.

“We are going to tie up with the departments concerned to crack the whip on PGs which are violating the policy laid down in 2006,” said an officer.
