Class XI boy’s death: Mohali DC orders magisterial probe

Mohali officiating Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain today ordered a magisterial inquiry into the death of a Class XI student of Senior Secondary School for Meritorious Students, Sector 70, here under mysterious circumstances. Aashika Jain has asked SDM Jagdeep Saigal to conduct the probe and submit a report within seven days.

The victim’s kin today held a protest against the police and the school authorities in front of the SSP’s office here. The family members of the deceased, Harmanjit Singh, met the SSP and submitted “evidence” along with an application.

The family members, who have alleged foul play in the death of 16-year-old Harmanjit in the hostel washroom, said they were demanding justice.

They alleged that the school authorities were hand in glove with the investigating police officers. They said all evidence clearly indicating towards murder and despite this, the police were not taking any action. They demanded that a case of murder should be registered against the school principal, Ritu Sharma, and the warden, Sushil Kumar.

Harmanjit’s mother Kiranjit Kaur said, “I will commit suicide if no action is taken against the school authorities by the police within two days.” She said only a mother could understand the grief of her son’s death.

Kiranjit Kaur said she had called up her son around 7.30 pm on the day of the incident, but his phone was not reachable. She alleged that her son was murdered and his phone was switched off by students.

The family members said they will hold a “chakka jam” and more protests if they did not get justice. They said they would file a writ against the police in the High Court if the police failed to take action.

Advocate Tejinder Sidhu of Punjab Against Corruption said, “In a heinous crime like this, it is the duty of the police to register an FIR before conducting an investigation. However, the police have not done so in this case. They are trying to wind up the case without any action against the culprits.”

SP (City) HS Virk said, “We have received an application from the victim’s kin. The inquiry has been marked to me. We have assured the family that a proper investigation will be conducted into the matter.”

The SP said a special investigation team (SIT) could also be formed in this case.
