The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered protection for a woman lawyer allegedly thrown out of her matrimonial home. The counsel for her husband has also assured the High Court that the woman lawyer would not be denied access to her matrimonial home.

The counsel further stated that in the eventuality of her husband’s mother causing impediment, he would ensure that adequate alternative arrangements towards residence were made for the petitioner-lawyer forthwith.

Taking up the matter, UT counsel Ashima Mor was directed to issue necessary instructions to the authorities concerned to ensure the protection of life and liberty of the petitioner.

The Bench was earlier told that the petitioner was a practising advocate and seeking directions to the official respondents under the UT Administration to ensure protection of her life and liberty.

Her counsel submitted that the petitioner was married to the respondent-husband in 2014. Since their marriage, she had been residing in her matrimonial house in Sector 35-A, Chandigarh, which was under the ownership of her mother-in-law.

Precise allegations raised in the petition were that the petitioner was thrown out of the matrimonial home on the intervening night of May 20 and 21 on account of an altercation. It was further alleged that the petitioner was being denied complete access to the house, which included her workplace.
