Chandigarh, MArch 7

Residents of New Chandigarh, Mullanpur, have moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the proposed amendments to the Master Plan of New Chandigarh. Counsel for the petitioners said on a civil writ petition filed before a Division Bench of the High Court, the matter had been adjourned with directions to the state counsel to explain the basis of the proposed amendments to the Master Plan of New Chandigarh.

Pray for quashing proposed amendments

In the civil writ petition, the residents have prayed for quashing of the proposed amendments whereby the Directorate of the Town and Country Planning, Punjab, had initiated the process, which was in complete contravention of the vision statement of the existing Master Plan having principles/concepts of development of large eco-friendly, diverse, green, smart and connected city with low carbon impact and with a futuristic vision.

It is submitted that amendments to the Master Plan of New Chandigarh have been initiated so as to decrease the minimum area requirement for setting up of plotted colony, which is in gross contravention of the concepts of the existing Master Plan 2008-2031 of New Chandigarh prepared by Singapore-based Jurong Consultants Private Limited.

It was stated by the petitioners that the proposed amendment in the Master Plan of New Chandigarh for affordable housing projects in between the existing mega projects would create pockets of small areas of affordable housing projects with inferior infrastructure, having less wide roads/internal roads in affordable housing project areas, leading to bottlenecks in the connecting roads leading from one mega project to another mega project going through the area of affordable housing project.
