Chandigarh, July 11

Contractual employees, including sanitation and housekeeping staff, of the PGIMER launched a chain hunger strike here today over non-fulfilment of their demands.

The protesters said the institute had failed to provide wages and other benefits on a par with regular employees on the basis of “equal pay for equal work”.

“In 2010, the then Deputy Chief Labour Commissioner, had directed the PGIMER authorities to implement “equal pay for equal work” principle for hospital attendants/housekeeping workers, sanitation attendants/workers, security guards and bearers/masalchi. However, the administration did not implement it even after nine years,” employees said.

The employees are also demanding regularisation of their services as per the notification of the Union government.

The employees also requested the authorities to settle the case of EPF of sanitation workers deputed in the PGIMER through contractors.
