Two theft cases reported from city

Chandigarh: Two house thefts have been reported from the city in which thieves decamped with valuables. According to the police, the complainant in one of the cases, Ravinder Singh, a resident of Sector 52, reported that two laptops, two mobile phones, a tablet, a gold chain, earrings, gold bangles, three silver coins and the registration certificate and the insurance certificate of a scooter were stolen.

The theft took place between October 4 and 6. A case has been registered at the Sector 36 police station. In the other incident, Kunal Sharma, a resident of Raipur Khurd, reported that a laptop and a gas cylinder were stolen from his house on October 5. A case has been registered at Mauli Jagran. TNS

Chain snatched 

Chandigarh: An unidentified pedestrian escaped after snatching a gold chain from a 67-year-old woman in Sector 34 on Sunday evening. The woman was buying vegetables when she was targeted. According to the police, the incident took place near the Sham fashion mall. The victim raised the alarm, but the accused managed to flee from the spot. The police were informed about the incident, who visited the spot. TNS

Medical conference 

Chandigarh: The 28th annual conference of the Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology, organised by the Division of Surgical Gastroenterology, Department of General Surgery, PGIMER, concluded on Sunday. The event was attended by over 700 gastrointestinal and hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons from India and world over. The conference was preceded by a surgical video workshop, wherein national and international faculty demonstrated videos of 25 procedures. The conference was inaugurated by Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Dev Vrat. The PGI was honoured for its research. TNS

CME-cum-workshop ends  

Chandigarh: Ninth CME-cum-workshop on laws applicable to hospitals concluded at the PGI. Chief guest Prof Nitin Nagarkar, Director, AIIMS, Raipur, while addressing the valedictory function, said, “With law enforcing agencies becoming more stringent, it is high time that health care professionals put in a combined effort to mutually exchange, brainstorm and streamline the application of legal knowledge in medical practice.” Earlier, Prof Jagat Ram, Director, PGI, said, “With the system constantly evolving, the increasing knowledge and enlightenment about frail health care practices have opened a pandora’s box in terms of legal issues and challenges for administrators. Therefore, the acid test for health care providers is to focus on giving the patients a better experience while conforming to the prevailing laws.” TNS

Medico-legal seminar 

Panchkula: The Haryana State Legal Services Authority (HALSA), Panchkula, organised a first-of-its kind medico-legal literacy seminar at Gurugram on Sunday.  Addressing the seminar, Justice Ajay Kumar Mittal of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, said, “The medical legal literacy is required more than ever before.” He said the basic knowledge of the law was essential for medical practitioners. He said there was a pressing need for all functionaries of the justice system to speak to each other to understand gaps in existing policies and laws.  Justice Mittal also said the criminal justice system couldn’t work effectively without doctors. Many medico-legal topis, including the PNDT and MTP Act and the violence against doctors, were discussed. Sessions Judge Puneesh Jindia said such seminars would be organised in other parts of the state. “These seminars remove barriers to justice,” he said. TNS

Students visit Chhatbir zoo

Mohali: Students of Rayat Bahra International School (RBIS) visited the Chhatbir zoo as part of the National Wildlife Week celebrations. The schoolchildren were amused to see lions, deer and a large number of bird species. Teachers accompanying the students explained to them various aspects of the wildlife and the necessity to celebrate Wildlife Week to protect the wild animals, whose many species were on the verge of extinction.  Ablisha Singh, principal of the school, said it was a valuable experience for the schoolchildren. Kaavya, Calvin win in tennis 

Chandigarh: City girl Kaavya Sawhney paired up with Salsa Aher of Maharashtra to win the girls’ U-18 doubles title on the concluding day of the Fenesta Nationals in New Delhi on Saturday.  Sawhney and Aher defeated Bhakti Shan and Damera 6-2 3-6 10-4. Another local trainee Calvin Golmei claimed the second position in the boys’ U-18 category after going down to Siddhant Banthia of Maharashtra. Banthia registered 6-7(0) 2-6 6-1 title win over Golmei. 

Manav Mangal gymnasts shine  

Panchkula: Gymnasts of Manav Mangal School, Panchkula, while representing the district won 23 gold medals in the recently concluded Haryana State Inter-Centre Gymnastics Championship at Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex, Sector 3. Kanav Gupta (15.10 points), Aanandita Sharma (17.20 points), Nikhil Kumar (18.25 points) and Aditi (14.85 points) won the gold in the individual category. Mehak, Kanav (16.45 points), Aananidta, Sonali, Mehak (14.65 points), Yashvi, Riya, Navya, Sarika, Shreya (12.70 points), Diksha, Aditi, Nikhil (14.35 points), Chetna, Vani, Samridhi, Vidushi, Pranav (11.80 points) won the top-three positions in the aerobics team events.

Ayush wins athletics bronze 

Chandigarh: City lad Ayush Rekhi won the bronze medal in the boys’ U-16 100m dash in the ongoing 30th North Zone Junior Athletics Championship at Rajiv Gandhi Sports Complex, Rohtak. He clocked 11.27s to finish third. Shivam of Delhi won the gold in 11.08s, while Vasu of Jammu & Kashmir claimed the bronze in 11.10s.0. 

Inter-media TT meet concludes 

Chandigarh: The two-day inter-media table tennis meet concluded on Sunday. Rajesh Moudgil won the men’s singles final defeating Surinder Rawal 7-11 11-9 13-11 11-9. In the semifinals, Rawal defeated Sukhwinder Pal Sodhi 5-11 11-7 15-13 7-11 11-4, while Moudgil defeated Rajiv Katyal 11-6 11-7 11-7. Sodhi and Katyal won the bronze. In the +55 years men’s singles final, Raj Rishi defeated Parvesh Kapur 11-6 11-9 12-10. Vidhya Narayanan won the women’s title by defeating Naina 11-3 11-3. In the men’s doubles final, Sodhi and Arvind Saini defeated Rajesh Moudgil and Saurabh Duggal 11-9 11-8 11-6. Umesh Ghrera/Harbinder Singh and Surinder Rawal/Sandeep Rana won the bronze medal. As many as 50 journalists participated in the championship.

St Joseph’s win overall trophy 

Chandigarh: St. Joseph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, won the overall trophy of the girls’ U-19 category on the concluding day of the CBSE Taekwondo North Zonal XV-XVIII Championship on Sunday. Path Finder School, Gurgaon, and Shah Satnam School, Sirsa, claimed the second and third positions, respectively. Meanwhile, in the individual category, Jessica of the host school won the gold medal in the below 73kg U-19 category. She defeated Ruchi Kapoor in the final. Kiranjot Kaur finished third. In the below 57kg category, Amandeep Kaur beat Muntaha Rasool to claim the gold medal.

MNSS boys win hockey title

Mohali: Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS), Sonipat, won the IPSC Hockey Championship defeating hosts Yadvindra Public School, Mohali, 5-2 on Sunday. Punjab Public School, Nabha, claimed the third position defeating Mayo College, Ajmer, 1-0

Cricket league from Oct 13 

Chandigarh: Sportsaga will launch the Season-2 of Box Cricket League (BCL) on the grounds of Strike Chandigarh (behind the Sukhna Lake) on October 13 and 14. More than 20 corporate companies, including State Bank of India, Canara Bank and AU Bank among others will participate in the tournament. Registrations are open till October 10.

Harpreet Kaur felicitated

Chandigarh: Mixed Martial Arts champion Harpreet Kaur was felicitated for winning the Norcal Graplling Championship (55-60kg) in Santa Clara (USA). She participated in the championship on behalf of the Budo Kai Do Martial Arts Federation of India. Harpreet belongs to Sunam in Sangrur district of Punjab. Harpreet has won nine international and 15 national medals besides a Black Belt Ni-dan. Local coach Munish Kumar congratulated harpreet. 

Kabaddi players among probables 

Chandigarh: Five Kabaddi players from the city have been selected in the probables squad for the Khelo India Kabaddi Academy. Mithun of Government Model Senior Secondary School  (Sector 45), Pawan of Sri Guru Gobind Singh School (Sector 35), Bablu of Government Model Senior Secondary School (Maloya), Kiran Patwal of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 37, and Vandini of Government Model Senior Secondary School, Dhanas, have been shortlisted by Sports India (SI) during the 64th National School Games held at Hatpipliya (Madhya Pradesh).The shortlisted players will undergo the assessment camp at SAI Netaji Subhas  Western Center, Sector 15, Gandhinagar, from October 18 to 22. 

GGS-26 win basketball meet 

Mohali: Guru Gobind Singh Collegiate School, Sector 26, defeated PML SD Public School, Sector 32, to win the boys’ U-19 category title on the last day of the CBSE Basketball Cluster Championship at Gian Jyoti Global School.  St Luke’s Senior Secondary School, Solan, claimed the third position. In the girls’ U-19 category, Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, defeated Durga Public School, Solan.St. Luke’s team claimed the third position. St. Soldier International Convent School – Phase 7, Mohali, won the boys’ U-17 title. TNS
