Amritsar, May 20

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI), Chaman Lal, has been placed under suspension for allegedly thrashing an advocate following a minor road mishap. The incident took place at Kathunangal police station here on Sunday.

The Amritsar Bar Association on Monday organised a protest against the police over the incident and demanded strict action against the ASI.

According to information, advocate Amrinder Uppal, along with his family, was returning to his residence on Sunday evening when his car collided with a bike near the Kathunangal toll plaza. It is alleged that ASI Chaman Lal, who reached the spot, hurled abuses at the lawyer. Though Uppal gave his introduction to the cop, the latter took him to Kathunangal police station and threatened to put him behind the bars besides “thrashing” him before his family. Amrinder was injured and later taken by his family to the Civil Hospital.

Amritsar Bar Association president Vipin Dhand said the lawyers went on a strike in protest against the incident and raised slogans against the police. They demanded registration of a case against the ASI.

The police took CCTV footage from the toll plaza and nearby areas and later suspended the ASI after a preliminary probe.

Meanwhile, SP (Investigations) Harpal Singh said the ASI had been suspended. “A departmental action will be initiated against him. A report has been sent to Amritsar (Rural) SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal in this connection,” he said, adding that it was a serious issue and he would look into this.
