Metro cities local students’ preference for higher studies

Since the declaration of Class XII results of various boards, meritorious students have been looking forward to taking admissions to renowned educational institutions, particularly Delhi University.

Despite having good courses and educational institutions in the city, the trend regarding students prefering metro studies and also other countries for higher studies is on the rise. Effective placements and personality development are the key factors, they say.

Nehmatpreet Kaur, who got 98.2 per cent marks in the CBSE Class XII examination, wants to pursue Bachelors in Economics (Hons) from Delhi University. She is determined to study in Delhi for better exposure. “Delhi University has multiple colleges. The place will give me exposure and opportunities,” she says.

Upasana Mehra, Principal, Senior Study II, says, “Expectations of the students have gone up as many of them have scored above 90 per cent, but the cut off will also be on the higher side. Many of them are also opting for Christ College, Bengaluru, due to the direct air connectivity with the city. Besides, they have options to study abroad.”

Noor A Singh, who scored 97 per cent in Class XII, says, “I have appeared in the entrance examinations of several institutes. I will also be applying for the DU. It is the exposure, better placement and other facilities in bigger cities that will matter after a few years.”

Meanwhile, a few students also feel that moving away from hometown depends upon the availability of the courses.

According to Nandini Gupta, who scored 97 per cent marks in the Class XII examination, “I wish to become a lawyer. My aim is to get admission to a reputed law college. I will also appear in the CLAT test.”

HS Walia, retired vice-principal of DAV College, says, “A good number of meritorious students are moving to metro cities and abroad for better educational opportunities, but we cannot rule out the fact that there are good students in our colleges. The best students leave the country for abroad and study in metro cities.”

“High rankers aspiring for top colleges are driven by higher education from top institutes and better employment opportunities,” he added.
